What, Where and How to Buy in May

In the month ahead, we're looking forward to spending more time outside than in, but that doesn’t mean there’s not shopping to be done! In fact, late spring is a terrific time to spend money wisely. Thinking about joining the gym? Is it time to replace that 20-year-old mattress? May may be your month to save when you spend.

Join a Gym

As temperatures begin to rise, bathing suit season creeps inevitably closer for most regions of the continental United States. Gym clubs, eager to capitalize on bathers anxious about showing off their post-winter bodies, begin to offer discounted memberships. If you’re looking to trim off a few pounds before heading to the beach, now is a good time to check in at your local gym.

Savvy Shopper Tip: Be sure to ask if they will wave the initial joining fee (which can run you up to $150). Don’t be afraid to haggle! Flex those negotiation muscles.

Go to the Mattresses

Human beings spend approximately one third of their lives sleeping. So if you’re constantly waking up with debilitating back or neck pain, it may be time to invest in a new mattress. Mattress manufacturers debut their new models in the summer, which means that in late spring they mark down last year’s stock to make room for inventory.

Savvy Shopper Tip: Do your homework online before you hit the stores. By pre-shopping mattresses on the web, you will be less likely to end up buying something you regret.

Make the Most of Memorial Day Deals

Your Memorial Day plans may be peppered with cookouts and parades, but don’t forget to take advantage of store sales and special offers. At the end of May, many retailers begin rolling out their summer merchandise, and, to entice buyers, they set initial prices at a discount. Outlet malls are especially keen to win business on the holiday.

Savvy Shopper Tip: Sign up for a VIP membership or frequent shopper card at an outlet near you (Tanger, for example) to enjoy special benefits like exclusive coupons, free coupon books and insider info on your favorite brands.

Be a Garage Sale Gadfly

When we think about going shopping, we often only think about going to the mall. But there are plenty of places outside of traditional brick and mortar retail shops to find fantastic bargains. This time of year, many people are still engaged in spring cleaning, and that often means garage sales are in full swing. With a little effort, you can find great deals on electronics, books, clothes and toys.

Savvy Shopper Tip: Scour the web before you head out the door so you don’t end up doing more driving than shopping. Websites like craigslist.org have listings dedicated to garage and moving sales.
